By: katherine.burgueno, MFA '90. Director of Finance and Human Resources, Yale School of Drama.

This paper focuses on three Hispanic theater companies: INTAR Hispanic American Arts Center (INTAR), Puerto Rican Traveling Theatre, and Repertorio Español. Founded in the late 1960’s and based in New York City, these three theaters have a common heritage and language, but they have different DNAs. At INTAR, the focus is on the development of the artist; the entire organization is structured to allow artists to create their works in an organic and free flowing environment. Puerto Rican Traveling Theatre is an institution “with a cultural and nationalistic objective, with a high regard for people who due to economic and educational limitations have been denied access to the arts.” Repertorio Español, with its permanent company of actors working in rotating repertory presents innovative, intelligent, Spanish language productions.
