• Tool: Organizational Analysis (2010)

By: Greg Kandel, Management Consultants for the Arts

An organizational analysis raises provocative questions, illuminates problems, and many times it unveils opportunities that may have eluded an organization. Most important, a rigorous, objective analysis, conducted at regular intervals, can help ensure that an organization remains faithful to its mission. Like a snapshot, an organizational analysis captures the state of an organization at a particular moment in time. Sometimes called a situational analysis, needs assessment, or management audit, this type of analysis helps you take stock of what your organization is doing relative to its past performance. Through this analysis, an organization evaluates its vulnerabilities and opportunities, examining how it works operationally within the context of its mission and external environment.
